The goals came early and often for the Greenwich boys soccer team in its FCIAC West Division matchup against Wright Tech on Friday in the season-opener for both teams.
Controlling possession and crisply passing the ball throughout the first half, scored seven times on their way to an impressive 7-0 win over Wright Tech at Cardinal Stadium.
“The passing was good, there was good ball movement and for the first game, we didn’t rush too much,” said Greenwich coach Kurt Putnam, whose squad advanced to the state final in 2019. “We got into a good tempo.”
Junior Jake Hugh-Jones registered Greenwich’s first goal of the season, converting a pass from senior Matias Lew in the seventh minute. Ten minutes later, senior Jeanel Boone tallied, putting the Cards on top, 2-0.
Tadeo Mendive gave Greenwich a 3-0 advantage in the 19th minute, then Lew booted a shot inside the left post from 15 yards out, making it 4-0 with 20:07 still remaining in the opening half. Boone assisted on the goal.
“The first 20, 25 minutes of the game, the other team is going to throw everything at you in terms of resistence, but we seemed to work our way through that and we had some nice team goals.”
Boone added a second first-half at the 17:05 mark, with Tom Mueffelmann getting the assist, then Alejandro Rodriguez converted a shot with 13:54 to go in the first half. Isaiah Flynn sealed the scoring for the Cardinals, tallying in the 35th minute.
Julien Colin got the start in goal for Greenwich, which visits Wright Tech on Tuesday.
“I was happy with our goalkeeping,” Putnam said. “Julien took control back there and our backline played with a lot of confidence.”
