Coach Jack Gale, the veteran PGA teaching professional, has his Shrewsbury golf team up and running. Finally.
“We’re about a month behind a usual fall schedule, and now we have only eight matches,” said Gale, whose team is in a pod with Leominster, Westboro, Wachusett and Algonquin.
The Colonials opened with a win over Leominster last week, and will play this week on Wednesday at Westboro and host Algonquin at The Haven CC in Boylston.
The Colonials are led by junior tri-captains Dave Kelley, Tim Marshall and Dixi “Sissy” Han, who in August carded a 79 at Highfields Golf & CC in Grafton to win the NEPGA Girls Junior Tour Championship by four shots among girls ages 14-18.
The captains will play in the 1 through 3 slots in the lineup, followed by senior Priyanshu Deshmukh in the fourth spot.
Interestingly, junior Brady Soldo, who would normally be playing football for the Colonials if the fall grid season wasn’t cancelled, decided to try out for the golf team and made it.
And senior Jamison Alicandro, a top hockey player for the Colonials, came out for the golf team for the first time and also made the varsity squad.
Gale said he’s hopeful that when his juniors are seniors next fall, a regular full schedule of matches and postseason tournaments will return.
“No districts or states this year, and that’s tough for kids because those are special days for high school golfers with 18 holes of competition,” said Gale. “COVID has made a lot of problems for a lot of people, but we are lucky to be at least out there playing some golf.”
