First-year coach Chris Haley is counting on a handful of veterans and a larger group of underclassmen to help Law back to its winning ways in 2021.
Haley was an assistant coach who assumed control of the program for the last two weeks of 2019 and was officially appointed head coach in early 2020 when Erik Larka resigned after four years as coach. Haley said he used the COVID year to put his stamp on the program.
Law will be led by senior captains Spencer Hannon and Lucas Pincus-Coyle, both of whom saw plenty of time as sophomores in 2019. Hannon started nine games at linebacker while Pincus-Coyle played three games at running back.
John Neider takes over at quarterback after getting some varsity reps as a freshman, Haley said. Solomon Mercado, Matt Hagerty, Amadeus Bettencourt and Sam Costantini “have shown promise in early competition at wide receiver,” he added.
Law’s offensive line will be led by 6-foot, 300-pound junior Louis Sabo, who saw time as a freshman toward the end of 2019. But, overall, it’s a green unit.
“We have tough, hardworking unit,” Law offensive line coach Bill Pinto said. “They are inexperienced but will be ready to go week one.”
Hannon will anchor a defensive unit that includes experience with Ryan McNellis and Luke Iaffaldano. Junior Brandon Leslie has showed promise on the defensive line, as have defensive backs Chris Engel, Jordan Hernandez and Michael Merchant.
Law, which posted back-to-back winning seasons, and reached the state playoffs in 2017, is looking to get back to its winning ways after a 2-8 season in 2019.
A number of their games will be against teams that also struggled to win games in 2019. Of the teams on Law’s 2021 schedule, only East Haven (7-3), Branford (6-4) and Hamden (6-4) had winning records in 2019. The remaining seven opponents, including four Alliance crossovers, went a combined 14-56.
